Standard 2: Know the content and how to teach it
2.1: Content and teaching strategies of the teaching area
An outline of a unit plan implemented in a bilingual Kindergarten classroom on the topic of ‘Time’, demonstrating selection and sequence of content and varied teaching strategies.

This unit plan followed the student-centered constructivist school of learning, where teaching strategies like role play, hands-on activity (paper plate clock making), and body-based clocks were incorporated effectively so learners could create their own understanding of concepts with the gradual release of assistance. Following student-centered teaching strategies allowed time for reflection and discussion to deepen cognitive linkages around concepts. The unit not only incorporated different strategies but was also sequenced logically to progress gradually from the introduction of concepts of sequencing and duration of events to reading time from analog clocks. The content was designed to be implemented with many opportunities for constructive discussion and the use of everyday language and topic-specific vocabulary after hands-on learning experiences. These effectively supported students to achieve the highest level on the continuum of understanding, transferring skills to real-life situations.
