Professional Engagement
Standard 6: Engage in professional learning
6.1: Identify and plan professional learning needs
A placement assessment report by the supervising teacher commenting on my professional practice in my final placement, affirming my ability to communicate effectively, but recommending refinement of my verbal communication and use of concise and precise messages.
Effective classroom communication is at the heart of being an effective teacher, however the complexities of communication are exacerbated in educational settings with greater pressures and by teachers’ preoccupations, as highlighted by Ground-Water, Smith, Ewing and Le Cornu (2015). Therefore, compartmentalising thoughts for clear and concise communication is an area of improvement which can be achieved by clarifying mentally what needs to be communicated and regular rechecking with students to ensure the message was received the way it was intended, as suggested by Ground-Water, Smith, Ewing & Le Cornu (2015).
