Standard 6: Engage in professional learning

6.4 Apply professional learning and improve student learning

This is a part of a lesson from the writing program that was implemented in my final placement for Kindergarten students. I incorporated the takeaway points from a ‘Big Write’ professional development workshop equipping teachers to prompt students to write effectively.

The evidence demonstrates that I used pertinent ideas suitable to my classroom context, derived from my professional training on the staff development day, to introduce an effective writing program gradually built upon prior episodes to verbalise students’ thoughts to structure the writing task. This activity not only engaged students but was a type of formative assessment to assess their needs and provide guidance accordingly with instant constructive feedback. The checklist for assessing students on writing tasks was adapted to our class and assessed students’ progress in writing with an Australian criterion scale (Taylor & Allder 2018) to impart objectivity to the assessment. Moreover, a student-friendly criterion scale was also incorporated for self-reflection by students to take charge of their learning and be motivated to learn to write.
