Professional Practice
Standard 3: Plan for and implement effective teaching & learning

3.4: Selection and use resources

A Maths unit plan observation report conducted by the supervising teacher on my final placement on the topic ‘Division’.

Students were very engaged throughout, with exposure to a wide range of well-selected resources aligned with the objectives. ‘Division’ as a topic required more practice to internalise the concept of formation of equal groups with or without remainders. They also had to try different strategies to share fairly with their partners. In order to consolidate the process, the students were exposed to a range of hands-on material that included real lollies, counters, and playdough in group settings to practise their fair sharing strategies, as recommended by Elizabeth, Katherine and Jodie (2014, p.3). They were also exposed to digital interactive sharing games, along with pertinent videos on the topic, to interact with a range of environmental tools and internalise the concepts effectively, as suggested by Vygotsky in his socio-cultural theory of learning. With frequent application of concepts by engaging with varied resources, students were observed to be more confident and ready to apply and solve problems in real situations. They also successfully attempted a portfolio task on the topic and demonstrated their learning through another medium, which was used as a sample assessment shared with parents.
