A planning web for a Maths unit on ‘Time’, used to design sequential learning experiences aligned with the Australian curriculum, including varied forms of assessment.

This unit was planned with achievement outcomes informed by the Australian curriculum as my focus for planning. These outcomes also informed my selection of assessment types to accurately assess students’ success at the conclusion of the unit. Variety of assessment caters to different types of learners and their representations of thinking. Planning backward from the objectives effectively aligned the learning experiences with the big picture of the unit. Outcomes around the development of skills like thinking and working mathematically and using everyday language informed the choice of pedagogy. The approach followed Vygotsky’s school of thought, i.e. it was more oriented to discussion and use of language. A well-designed unit plan allows for inclusive opportunities and objectivity in planning gives all students a fair chance to succeed.
